Дело в Верховном суде США [Supreme Court, U.S.], решение по которому (1857) подтвердило предыдущие постановления Суда о том, что негры не имеют права на получение гражданства и, соответственно, на предъявление исков к своим хозяевам и что США не должны запрещать рабство на незаселенных территориях. Дред Скотт вместе с хозяином уехал из рабовладельческого штата Миссури на свободную территорию [free soil] (штат Иллинойс и Территорию Висконсин), но через 4 года был возвращен в родной штат. Скотт подал в суд и потребовал свободы, заявив, что въехал из свободного штата как свободный гражданин. Решение было аннулировано с принятием Тринадцатой [Thirteenth Amendment] и Четырнадцатой [Fourteenth Amendment] поправок.
